This photo is from Alice and I love it! Nathan and Sofia were helping work on Paul’s grave when we planted the spring flowers there. I forgot to bring my camera, so the pictures I have are from when I returned alone the next day. Alice does so much to keep Paul’s memory alive in Nathan’s mind. Maus was only a few weeks old when he died. Ingmar and Emily drove from Bellefonte to Akron City Hospital when they heard the sad news and brought two week old Sofia with them. I have a picture of this too. I have taken it out because Alice convinced me that it would make most of you too sad to see it…….. But I think we were all touched that Sofia could be with her grandfather even if only for such a short time at the end of his life and the beginning of hers…….Before the terrible accident that made his doctors use so much pain medication that he was always in a coma, but after Sofia was born, he remembered that she was born. It was a sort of miracle that he could remember this when he forgot almost everything else. He asked Alice, “Didn’t someone new come over the weekend?” He also never forgot that Emily had gotten her PhD and that she was expecting a baby. He was such a special person that I want his grandchildren to have an idea of what a loving, generous, funny, smart man he was.
